1.4. THE WISH(ING) TREE
One popular Tanabata* custom (Japanese) is to write one's wishes on a piece of paper, and hang that piece of paper on a specially erected bamboo tree, in the hope that the wishes become true.
* Tanabata (meaning "Evening of the seventh") is a Japanese "star festival" which takes place on the 7th day of the 7th month of the year. It celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (represented by the stars Vega and Altair respectively). According to the legend, the two stars/lovers Altair and Vega, which are usually separated from each other by the Milky Way, are only able to meet on this day.

Youths always have a list of things they wished to be different from the way they are. So, this year we (English teachers) have decided to have a WISH TREE in our school. All you have to do is to write your own wishes for 2014. Think of something and write it down. It may be connected to young people, world peace, your school, Portugal, the world, your family and friends ... Then post your wishes here. I'll correct the English and you'll write them on a Christmas decoration you may do yourself with a piece of coloured cardboard and the shape of a Christmas decoration. You may also decorate it with your own drawings. Then, bring it to class so that we'll put it on our own WISH TREE.
HAVE FUN AND ENJOY YOURSELF!
